Weekly Report: May 19 - May 25: Lenore Lake and North Fork Trout Creek Falls

Lenore Lake: On Wednesday, May 25th, Skye and hiked into Lenore Lake up Two-Mile Road outside of St. Regis. It's a small lake that is just a half mile from the road, but it is around an 800 foot climb thhrough the brush and lots of deadfall with no established trail. The lake was almost completely unfrozen with just the far side having some ice. The weather wasn't very cooperating; it started hailing pea-sized hail as I was approaching the lake and then changed over to snow and rain once I got there. The lake is stocked every 5-7 years but I haven't seen any the past 2 times I have visited the lake. The sun eventually came out and it turned into a pretty nice day.

North Fork Trout Creek Falls: On Friday, May 23rd, Skye & I hiked up the trail #156 towards Trail Lake. The main goals were to visit the 2 falls that were near the trailhead on the North Fork of Trout Creek. The first falls is only 1/4 mile upstream from the trailhead. It is about a 10-15 foot falls with a very steep drop down the hill to the waters edge. There are two 20 foot ropes to help get down and back up out of the falls. It is very steep and extremely slick with the spray from the falls covering everything. I didn't want to risk getting Skye injured and I didn't want to tie her up so I didn't go all the way down to the falls. I continued up the trail for another 1/2 mile but there was a lot of snow at the second creek crossing and was going to be wet.

The second falls is about 1/2 mile downstream from the trailhead along an old brushy road. This falls is about 8-10 feet tall, but the pool is very large and deep; maybe as much as 10 feet deep. We used to cross country ski from the old grader shed on the main road when the mill was open and plowing the road up toward Trail Lake. I fished the pool a couple of times and did catch a couple very nice trout out it.
