Although just a handful of lakes are accessed from Trout Creek, they all offer good opportunities for hiking, fishing and camping. Most routes are well maintained trails, with multiple campsites available at the lakes. Unfortunately, this means a lot of people, especially on the weekends. From what I have seen the past few years, Heart Lake may see over 100 people on a summer weekend, a product of its own reputation and popularity. For some possible solitude a mid-week visit is a necessity. Part of my reason for creating this guide is to prompt people to spread out a bit and not overrun one area or lake. Many people just don't know how many lakes there are in the Great Burn region and how to access them. I have a lot of history with this area and the lakes hold a special place for me. Illinois and Lightning Peaks can be accessed from this area, however there are many high points that offer some spectacular vistas just off the main state line trail.
