Trout Creek Area

The lakes in this area can be accessed via Trout Creek Road #250 / Hoodoo Pass outside of Superior. Even though the Trio & Goose Lakes are listed in the Fish Creek - Clearwater Crossing pages, I include them in this area as viable destinations.

The lakes in the Trout Creek area offer excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing and camping. Most routes are on well maintained trails, with the exception of Hidden and Middle Trio Lakes, with multiple campsites available at the lakes. Unfortunately, this means a lot of people, especially on the weekends. From what I have seen for many years, Heart Lake may see over 100 people on a summer weekend, a product of its own reputation and popularity. This heavy visitation has also spread to Pearl and Dalton Lakes. For some possible solitude a mid-week visit is a necessity or going a little bit further; aka the Trio Lakes. The only fishless lakes are the Middle Trio Lake and Goose Lake. Part of my reason for creating this guide is to prompt people to spread out a bit and not overrun one area or lake. Many people just don't know how many lakes there are in the Great Burn region and how to access them. I have a lot of history with this area and the lakes hold a special place for me. Illinois and Lightning Peaks can be accessed from this area, however there are many high points that offer some spectacular vistas just off the main state line trail.
