Lakes of the Great Burn
Site under development and will continue to change.

Fish Creek & Clearwater Crossing Area

The lakes are accessed from multiple trailheads; Clearwater Crossing & Hoodoo Pass in MT, and Goose & Lake Creek in ID.

At the heart of the Great Burn proposed wilderness are a set of magnificent lakes. There isn't a lake in this area that isn't worth a visit. You will have to work hard to visit some of these gems as hikes range from 6 to almost 15 miles; with terrain that can be challenging. The trails tend to be in good shape as the Ninemile Ranger District has an excellent trail maintenance program and staff. In addition, the horse packers that use this region keep many of the trails cleared of most deadfall. This area has some great 2 to 5 day loop routes; lots of options when planning a trip. Crater Mountain, Lightning and Straight Peaks are worthwhile peaks that can be climbed as walk ups from nearby lakes. Fishing is generally good, but at times can be exceptional. Middle Trio, Goose and W Fork Fish Creek Lake 2 are the only lakes that don't carry a fish population. The only lakes in this area that I have not been to are the 2 Steep Lakes (aptly named), but they are on my priority list. Winter / Spring ski trips are also an option here. I have skied to the Greenwood Cabins up the North Fork trail and to the stateline above Fish Lake via the West Fork trail. If the road is plowed to the Iowa State Research Center, the access is good.
