Weekly Report: October 13 to October 19: Copper & Heart Lakes

Copper Lake: On Tuesday Skye & I headed up to Lookout Pass and hiked into Copper Lake. We also went up a nearby side by side trail to see where it went. The morning was cool but warmed up as the morning went on. The snow level was at 5,000 feet the elevation of Copper Lake. We did see some black bear tracks in the snow near the lake but they were a day or two old.

Heart Lake: On Wednesday, taking advantage of the good fall weather, my brother Kelly, Kasa and I headed up Trout Creek outside of Superior to hike into Heart Lake. The trailhead was empty, something I haven't seen in a long time, but that wouldn't last. It was a brisk 30 degrees when we started out and we started running into snow about halfway to the lake. The temperature warmed up after we climbed up the switchbacks and out of the creek bottoms. A young couple with 2 big dogs passed us just before the lake. We ended up heading over to the right along the shoreline as the dogs just kept getting wilder and more aggressive with each other. We had and early lunch and stayed for almost an hour. With calm waters, snow and blue skies the setting was exceptional. Post card calibeer. Just as we were leaving the lake, we met up with a couple gentlemen our age or just a bit older. Those two groups were the only ones that we saw for the day.
